Bucharest, the capital and largest city of Romania, sits on the river Dambovita in the south-eastern part of the country. Known as Little Paris, it offers eclectic architecture that blends historical, socialist-realist and modern styles. Once devastated by wars and earthquakes, the city is now developing rapidly. In Bucharest it is worth visiting the Cismigiu Gardens, Herastrau Park and the botanical garden with more than 10 000 plant species. The best time to visit is spring and autumn, when temperatures are moderate.
